At Parkhouse Ecology, we offer a range of professional bird surveys across the South West, tailored to meet planning, legal, and conservation requirements. Whether you are managing a development site, restoring habitat, or assessing land use change, our ornithological expertise ensures you remain compliant while protecting bird populations.
Birds are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, with some species afforded additional protection. Disruption of nests or destruction of habitat without proper
assessment can result in delays, fines, or prosecution.
Bird surveys help identify breeding, nesting, foraging, and migratory activity, allowing mitigation to be integrated into your plans early.
You may require a bird survey if your project falls under any of the following conditions:
Involves vegetation clearance, especially during the breeding season (March to
August)
Takes place near woodlands, hedgerows, wetlands, grasslands or coastal areas
Affects habitats used by Schedule 1 or red-listed species
Requires planning permission or falls under environmental legislation
Could cause disturbance during construction, lighting, or operational phases
Standardised monitoring of breeding species, typically during spring and early
summer.
Pre-clearance surveys to confirm presence or absence of nesting birds before
vegetation removal.
Used for recording flight activity, particularly for wind farms and large infrastructure
projects.
Ideal for sites with known bird interest, including protected coastal or upland species.
All surveys are carried out by experienced ornithologists in line with industry best practice, including BTO, SNCO, and CIEEM guidelines.
