Why Do I need an ECoW?
What is an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)?
An ECoW is an ecologist who specialises in overseeing site-based construction activities that may impact on wildlife both onsite and the surrounding area. An ECoW’s duty is ultimately to protect the client from falling foul of UK wildlife law, which could result in delays, bad publicity, heavy fines and/or imprisonment.
Protection & Peace of Mind
An ECoW will monitor works to make sure biodiversity and environmental laws are adhered to, and ensure any mitigation procedures required by planning authorities are followed. An ECoW can also give advice on protecting or enhancing biodiversity on site, give toolbox talks on protected species, prevent costly delays by spotting potential problems early and attend site meetings or write reports.
